Monolithos Castle

The Monolithos Castle, or the Castle of Monolithos, is a Venetian castle built in 1480. Towering over the small traditional village of Monolithos on the western tip of the island of Rhodes, this castle was used as a form of protection from pirates and other enemies. The castle sits on a rock 236 meters high and many agree that it is the most impressive fortress on the entire island of Rhodes. The steep slopes leading up to the fortress successfully kept invaders out and saved the inhabitants from many attempted attacks back in the day. Today the climb to the top is one done by many tourists, both to explore the castle’s surroundings and to admire the castle itself.
